This children’s fantasy is based on Norse mythology. Odd, a crippled boy, has run away to an old woodcutter cabin in the forest. While trying to survive in the extended cold season he meets a bear, a fox and an eagle who are gods that have been transformed. After hearing their story, he sets out with them to regain their city and break the spell on them. To do this and to bring spring to the human world he must outsmart the Frost Giant. A fun read. ( )

I am always on the hunt for books that feature curious, clever, kind, brave boys. This book exactly satisfies. Odd is willing to take a group of forest animals in, they, in turn accept his help to defeat the frost giant that had taken over Asgaurd. The writing and pace are both gentle, leaving the reader interested in how they will get back home, without being subjected to too much peril or scariness. It was a great choice for reading aloud to my five year old, although I did edit one or two sentences. ( )
