The Merry Devil of Edmonton lay unperformed from the early seventeenth century until the 1980s. Dating from around 1604, it was first published in 1608 and was performed at the Globe Theatre by the King's Men. With its scenes of magic, deer poaching, and abduction from a nunnery, The Merry Devil of Edmonton combines romance and comedy in a highly entertaining way, and was a favorite production on the seventeenth century stage.

Part of the Nick Hern Books Globe Quartos series, co-published with Shakespeare's Globe marking their rediscoveries of forgotten plays by Shakespeare's contemporaries. This popular Globe play of the early-17th century, with its mixture of magic, deer poaching and abduction from a nunnery, combines romance and comedy in a highly entertaining way. The Merry Devil of Edmonton was reprinted five times in the fifty years following its first appearance in 1608. A 'dear delight' for London audiences of the time, it was revived both in a reading at the Globe in the winter of 1999 and subsequently in exploratory workshops on the Globe stage. This edition of the play is edited by Nicola Bennett.
