This cute children's graphic novel stars Michael, a boy who is the victim of bullying at school. He travels into a magical world where he becomes a kung-fu master, and things are not what they seem.

Michael gets embarrassed at school in front of a girl he likes and vows revenge on the bully. His grandfather tries to teach him the merits of nonviolence, but Michael decides to go on a quest with Little Vampire to find the Kung Fu master Rabbi Solomon in Cat-Man Do. Michael must learn the secrets of Kung Fu to defeat the Siamese dragon Lumpii and win back the Rabbi's secret Kung Fu book.

Little Vampire Does Kung Fu is a seemingly complicated story with memorable characters, and an underlying simple moral theme of learning to do what's right. ( )

Horrible is wonderfully horrible

I continue to be delighted by Sfar's Little Vampire series. This story does surprise me now and then (a bully that gets ripped to shreds through a misunderstanding? A Rabi Kung Fu master living on a mountain?), but none of it detracts from the pure little kid fun of ghouls and ghosts who are nice, and boys and bullies who are not. The art is still Gorey/Burton lovely. I will read more of Sfar as soon as I can find it. ( )

Absolutely wonderful. Sfar has a way with creating gnarly, funny, beautiful art that almost crawls off the page. I wouldn't actually recommend it for younger kids, but it's still one of my favorite little graphic novels. ( )
