I don't know if kids would like this or not. It was a real comedown after reading The Secret of Platform 13. The ghosts were grisly, but might appeal to kids who like the crude and the macabre, and the "humans spoiling the environment" message was so heavy-handed I could barely lift up the book. I quit after about 1/3 of the way through, I couldn't take it anymore. ( )

Something terrible is happening! Ghosts everywhere in are losing their homes. Dark and damp castles, swampy areas under bridges, cold and dark wells and neglected attics are all being renovated into cheery, touristy areas. Where are the ghosts to go?

Humphrey and his family are on the search for a new home. Along the way they take refuge in the dormitory of a boys' school. Being invisible, they think they are safe, but there is a small problem and that is Humphrey. It seems that he can't go completely invisible...his elbow just doesn't quite disappear.

When Rick sees a cobwebby bit on end of his bed, he reaches for it and discovers it isn't really there. But his touch wakes Humphrey up and Humphrey becomes visible! Rick is delighted to make the acquaintance of a ghost, and Humphrey is happy to find someone to explain the trouble his family is in. Between the two of them they come up with a plan to create a sanctuary for all ghosts.

When one is found and all looks well, it is discovered that it is an even worse situation that the ghosts are now in! Will Rick the Rescuer be able to help the ghosts again?

This was a fun read. The ghosts all have their strange personalities, but they are all like one big family in their concern for each other. Rick is a determined boy and concerned that his friends need help. ( )

Fun, just a little didactic, best for actual children rather than young-at-heart adults. ( )

Book description
The ghosts of Britain need a sanctuary. Castles with central heating, bogs drained for motorways, dismal forests cleared for car parks-there are few places left for a respectable ghost to haunt. Humphrey the Horrible (actually his name is simply Humphrey-he added "the Horrible" to help himself become horrible) is a small, mostly unsuccessful ghost in a family of ghastly ghouls. His mother worries. Nobody knew what had gone wrong with Humphrey. Perhaps it was his ectoplasm'. Humphrey the Horrible sounds scary, but he's actually a very friendly skeleton, with twinkling eye sockets and jangling finger bones. Humphrey dreams of being ghastly, like his brother - a screaming skull - or terrifying, like his bloodsucking vampire-bat cousins. But when Humphrey discovers an evil plot to exorcise his family he finally realizes you don't have to be spine-chillingly fearsome to be a hero. But Humphrey has enough pluck to befriend a smart, politically aware schoolboy, Rick Henderson, who is willing to take the ghosts' cause right to the top, to number 10 Downing Street-home of the Prime Minister.
