"Jean Blomart, privileged bourgeois turned fighter against the Nazi Occupation, is waiting through the endless night for his lover Helene to die. Flashbacks interweave the stories of their lives and their tortuous relationship until, with dawn approaching, Jean faces a monumental decision." "The Blood of Others, written during the Occupation and published in 1945, portrays the agony of defeat and resistance in wartime France, and the inner awakening of a man impelled by anger and obsessed with guilt. It remains Simone de Beauvoir's most gripping and human dramatization of the existentialist's dilemma, examining the nature of love, fate and personal freedom, and asking the question: how much responsibility can one truly have for the lives of others?"--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Een jonge Parijse intellectueel wordt zich bewust dat men zowel door wat men doet als door wat men nalaat altijd verantwoordelijk is tegenover zijn medemensen.

Simone de Beauvoir might be one of the old school feminists, but she writes like a misogynist. ( )

The adventures of a couple during the late 1930's and the War in France. The style is spare and direct, a virtue in my eyes as I was dealing with it as a second language experience. the characters seem a little flat but all in all, it is a tidy book, and well steeped in the existential philosophy of its time. I read a library copy of this 1946 work. ( )

A No-Man-is-an-Island kind of book. Lots of talking and little real action - how our behavior affects others and what responsibility we hold for those in our sphere of relationships. Some of the beginning was difficult to follow, it was almost stream-of-consciousness and I found it confusing. Towards the middle it evens out into proper dialogue and description and I found it easier. The angst wears you out. ( )
