Wry like the first book, but a little darker, more serious of a story. The original protagonist has grown up and changed, and not entirely to the good. But Bartimaeus is the same: still enjoyable, wry, seasoned, powerful yet vulnerable. The state of the government, and how it came about, is explained more fully, and is interesting. I can't wait to read Book #3. ( )

very good. It does not read like a trilogy (and seeing that there are at least 4 books - its not)... and it is not a "part 2".. you could read this out of sequence and never know it was part of a series. Good story - and this guy really writes like he's drawing cartoons - or Movie scenes - pretty amazing! ( )

Excellent second part of the series, it maintains what I loved about the first part (the funny perspective of the djinn Bartimaeus and the contrast with the talented but naive and overly serious Nathaniel), while at the same time developing the setting a lot, and giving us a different outside perspective of the magician's world.
