As your reading, students will be assigned to a certain category (childhood, speeches, politics, goals, etc.) While reading, students will have to take notes about their topics that they have. When the book is done, students will have to create a page with an illustration about their facts. The students will share their findings and their pages will be posted on bulletin board. This way students are learning about Abraham Lincoln while comprehending the book. You could also use this in a 4th grade classroom as a read aloud in order to introduce the idea of a biography. While reading, tell the students to take notes about what they notice. Tell them to pay attention to what the author talks about (like where he's from, maybe how old he is, etc). When you are done, the students will have to write their own biographies about themselves using some of the ideas that the author did. Thus, I feel like the draw to this book was less the author and more the subject. But isn't it always with books about Lincoln? ( )
