"This anthology of comics inspired by real-life missed connection ads posted on Craigslist and in local papers around the country will tug at your heartstrings and make you think. Lonely hearts, romantics, and even cynics pore over missed connection ads in search of love, to gawk and giggle, or out of curiosity. These posted stranger sightings and chance encounters lay bare the truths and oddities of real-life loneliness and attractions and bring out the voyeur in the best of us"--P. [4] of cover.… (more)
Bit disappointing as an anthology. The premise (illustrating Missed Connections from Craigslist) is excellent in theory, but doesn't really deliver on paper. Possibly partly due to the unremitting desperation of the Missed Connections themselves, but mostly, I think, because they're actually very difficult to turn into interesting, engaging and satisfying stories. In the end this mostly kinda dragged, which was a shame and not really the fault of anyone involved. ( )
More please! Great collection of comics. Enjoyed the sheer variety of artists and their interpretations of the many "missed connections" included in this anthology. Some of my favorites:
Marshmallow!! by Rama Hughes
May 20, 1987 by Dan Archer
Cute boy at Jimmy's in Brooklyn by Julia Wertz
Looking for Print Pal by Matt Leunig
So...She married me anyway by Jonathan Baylis and T.J. Kirsch
Ahh! I'm flipping through the pages trying to absorb my favorites as I type out the titles. I have to return this book to the library today and I'm already having separation anxiety. ( )
Like any collection, this has some hits and some misses. In this case, though, many of the misses can be blamed on the source material, since Missed Connection ads are sometimes funny but frequently somewhat monotonous.
