1225. The Hundred Years War, by Edouard Perroy (21 June 1973) The war began in May 1337 and ended in October 1453. This was quite a good book, though awfully light on description of the military action. As an example, the battle of Agincourt on Oct. 25, 1415, is covered in one paragraph of four sentences. (The author is French and that probably explains that!) But even Joan of Arc's military career is covered in two or three pages. I found, as of old, that I was glad to see France triumph. ( )

Introduction to the English Edition by David C. Douglas -- To introduce to English readers an historical work written by a distinguished Professor of History at the Sorbonne is a high privilege, and in exercising it a writer must inevitably be conscious of attempting a task which might seem otiose or even impertinent.

Author's Preface -- The greater part of this work was written uninterruptedly, during the winter of 1943-4, thanks to the precarious leisure granted to me during an exciting game of hide-and-seek with the Gestapo.
