To be honest, I spent the first half of the book wanting to wallop Anne (with an “E”!) upside the head. Everything was so PRECIOUS and full of RAINBOWS and FLOWERS except the things that were LAMENTABLE and DRAMATIC and I felt the need to read in ALL CAPS in my head. But as Anne (with an “E”!) got older, she tamed the ALL CAPS and became just someone who speaks! and thinks! with a lot of exclamation points. And that I could handle a lot better. I liked the little vignettes of Anne (with an “E”!)’s childhood — the mishaps and the friendships and her thoughts on life. I absolutely adored Matthew Cuthbert, which broke my heart later on. And of course I liked Gilbert Blythe. So despite being annoyed in the beginning, I ended up liking it and starting Anne of Avonlea, in which she becomes a young woman and is much easier to handle.

I LOVED this book. Why had I never read it?? I laughed out loud throughout the whole thing. What a delightful, unusual characater. It was a thrilling book! ( )
