You do have to get past the typically misleading text on the cover and first inside page, which lead you to believe the story is going to be even more sordid than it is. Where Brown succeeds here is in his transformation of Ray Fleck from an unlikable but somehow still sympathetic character to a real monster who would....well you'll just have to read it for yourself to find out.
