Not my favorite in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, but still very well-written, with complex characters and important themes. Erikson has a way of turning characters 180 degrees and upending the reader's previous notions about them. My complaints are with the slow, slow pace of much of this book, building up, I know, to the final book in the series, and with the storylines and characters that seem relatively unrelated to both the main plot lines and the previous installments in the series. If Toll the Hounds is slow and steady, then this book is a tortoise for 90% and a Hood damned rocket for the rest 10%. The K'chain definately stole the show, with the malazans second and the Bargahst plot, which I thought was overly depressing and confusing, taking up the rear. Who knows how Erikson is going to finish all this, but we'll see. THE RANKING THUS FAR: DG no reviews | add a review
