When introduced to one of the main characters--an autistic teen duped into joining the Army so a recruiter can save his butt from being sent back to Iraq--the "special" in "Special Forces" takes on more meaning. It's not necessarily a profound meaning, but at times Kyle Baker's satire made me shift in my seat a little--especially when it comes to his dedicating the book "to the memories of the countless nameless, unspeakably brave mentally handicapped and/or felons who gave their lives in service of Freedom." That uncomfortableness that I felt was the best part of satire working on me, a gentle queasiness that grew as I realized Baker's not too far off from the truth. Even though the character's flaws are magnified, and their heroics taken to the point of action blockbuster-movie proportions, Baker pulls out some essential truths of America's war for the reader to face: that we rely heavily on the have-nots to fight for us; that war breeds misery; and that our fighting men and women suffer the consequences of a politician's decisions with little support once the shit hits the fan. The book is the harshest, most serrated satire of the Iraq war yet published.
