Excerpt from Aeschyli TragoediaeThe late Professor Jowett, whose authority in matters of criticism was greater than is sometimes admitted, was wont to say that the next edition of Aeschylus ought to be 'monumental, ' or in other words that it should follow the mss. Very closely, conjectural readings, of which only the chief should be recorded, being relegated to the critical notes. That task, however, has been ren dered needless through the work of Kirchhoff (berlin, 1880) and the truly monumental industry of Wecklein and Vitelli.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
