Fiction. Romance. HTML:

Lucy Lang isn't looking for fireworks...

She's looking for a nice, decent man. Someone who'll mow the lawn, flip chicken on the barbecue, teach their future children to play soccer. But most important: someone who won't inspire the slightest stirring in her heart...or anywhere else. A young widow, Lucy can't risk that kind of loss again. But sharing her life with a cat named Fat Mikey and the Black Widows at the family bakery isn't enough either. So it's goodbye to Ethan, her hot but entirely inappropriate "friend with privileges," and hello to a man she can marry.

Too bad Ethan Mirabelli isn't going anywhere. As far as he's concerned, what she needs might be right under her nose. But can he convince her that the next best thing can really be forever?

Prelim Review: Kristan Higgins has become a favorite of mine because her stories are never about earth-shattering, world-ending love or couples who overcome extreme obstacles in order to be together. They're simple tales about men and women trying to find something to hold onto. THE NEXT BEST THING focused on more than Lucy's quest for 'Mr. Ordinary' (a man who she can build a life with but never break apart over like her first husband Jimmy), it focused on how no matter what you can't know everything about the person you love. That sometimes the right thing is being strong for that person even if the truth hurts so much.

This was just a little less enjoyable for me than the first book in this series 4*, but would recommend if you like contemporary romances. ( )

This still fitted the bill when I desperately needed some solid feel-good chick-flick-lit that would be happy but not make me roll my eyes... but it wasn't thoughtful or really moving like Higgins' other works, unfortunately. ( )

Such a frustrating book. Too many crazies in this story. Lucy definitely needed medication. She was kind of nuts. What a tragic love story. I feel so bad for Ethan, though. He took a lot from Lucy. I'm sure she's getting the much better deal here. But, by the end, she seemed to be figuring out how to live. She took the necessary steps to change her life, so that was encouraging. She still wasn't my favorite heroine, either and I still don't think she was good enough for Ethan, but overall, this wasn't terrible. It just wasn't my favorite either. ( )

Let me tell you, I'm not happy to have wasted spent my precious time on this book. I don't know why I did, really.
This is another brick in the wall of my immense dislike towards chick lit. (I honestly wish there were fewer, but well-written books are few and far between...)
It wasn't all bad but...
This is so not for me.

I feel like strangling Lucy. She does not deserve Ethan. She does NOT ( )

Book description

Lucy Lang became a widow in her late twenties when her husband Jimmy fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his car. She blames it on the family curse: her mother and her aunts all lost their husbands at relatively young ages, and now she and The Black Widows, as she calls them, channel their energy into running their Hungarian bakery. But when Lucy’s younger sister has her first baby, Lucy starts to think that maybe it’s time to get back in the dating game—it has been five years, after all. She’s still young, and attractive, and she still wants a family, so she should put herself out there, even if nobody can quite measure up to her Jimmy. However, this means she has to stop sleeping with her best friend Ethan—who also happens to be her brother-in-law. But maybe she doesn’t need to look so far for what she wants.
