"Frindle" by Andrew Clements is about a fourth-grade student named Nick who challenges the authority of his teacher. Nick learns how to voice his opinion and rally the troops. I like this book because there is some on-level language and some more advanced language so the students can build their vocabulary.

This is a book after my linguist heart. Why do we use the words we do to describe the things we want to describe? Nick Allen, a 5th grader, asks that very question. When his teacher, Mrs. Granger, tells him that things are in the dictionary because someone, at some point, made them up, Nick decides to take matters into his own hands and changes the name of a "pen" to a "frindle." The word soon catches on and spreads beyond Nick's control. Mrs. Granger treats this as an issue of respecting her authority and the battle is on.

Overall, this slim children's book says a lot about language, conformity, the pressures of society, and the bravery to be a catalyst for change. The characters are well-rounded, including the authority figures, who are often painted with a broad brush in children's fiction as being the enemy--in Frindle, we see that different adults react differently to new things, and that adult reactions often have good underlying reasons. Brian Selznick's great pencil illustrations complement the text. ( )

"Frindle" is a witty and thought-provoking novel that celebrates the creativity and imagination of children and the importance of questioning the status quo.

First words
If you asked the kids and the teachers at Lincoln Elementary School to make three lists – all the really bad kids, all the really smart kids, and all the really good kids – Nick Allen would not be on any of them. Nick deserved a list of his own, and everyone knew it.

Quotations
So many things have gone out of date. But after all these years, words are still important. Words are still needed by everyone. Words are still used to think with, write with, to dream with, to hope and pray with. And that is why I love the dictionary. It endures. It works. And as you know, it also changes and grows.

Book description
Is Nick Allen a troublemaker? He really just likes to liven things up at school -- and he's always had plenty of great ideas. When Nick learns some interesting information about how words are created, suddenly he's got the inspiration for his best plan ever...the frindle. Who says a pen has to be called a pen? Why not call it a frindle? Things begin innocently enough as Nick gets his friends to use the new word. Then other people in town start saying frindle. Soon the school is in an uproar, and Nick has become a local hero. His teacher wants Nick to put an end to all this nonsense, but the funny thing is frindle doesn't belong to Nick anymore. The new word is spreading across the country, and there's nothing Nick can do to stop it.
