Fiction. Mystery. HTML:Another dose of hilarity and mayhem from the author Carl Hiaasen calls "the real deal"

In this winner of the German Thriller Prize, ex-cop Simon Brenner, as part of his never-ending quest to get as far away from being a cop as he can, takes a job as an ambulance driver in downtown Vienna.

It's a hair-raising job, though, made more so by the tendency of the other EMTs to place bets on how many red lights they can run. Even worse, Brenner's new employer has a problem: its major competitor is somehow listening in on radio communications and beating his unit to every pickup. Knowing his past on the force, Brenner's boss asks him to act like a cop and investigate. Meanwhile, is it Brenner's paranoia or are certain wealthy elderly patients who are essentially healthy dying more quickly than they should?

It isn't long before Brenner's life is in real danger, and once again it will take a certain amount of booze, pills, and bad behavior for our man to survive being a cop one more time.

Der Fall des Lemming by Stefan Slupetzky (Christof.Capellaro)
Christof. (more)

Also the third volume of the Simon Brenner series was thrilling. Brenner is currently working in Vienna as a paramedic driver. When there are murders within the troop, the boss requested that Brenner try to uncover this. Brenner discovers that colleagues are trading drugs. It will be difficult for Brenner who he still can trust. ( )

Haas eben. Vielleicht nicht das beste, allerdings immer unterhaltsam. ( )

This series of murder mysteries are published in the US by Melville House. This publisher markets several series of "international" mysteries. This novel is set in Vienna with a former policeman who has found a new job as an EMT. While he is employed he learns that the private company he works for is involved in corruption and murder in order to rob the elderly rich. Then there are more murders to cover up the first murders. The novel is full of understated Germanic humor that might fly right over the heads of most American's, but if you understand this kind of cultural humor this is a really funny novel. Haas has a great cast of secondary characters, which is usual in his Brenner novels, that add to the fun and games. This is also a literary/musical novel in that the title is referencing one of the songs out of St. Matthew's Passion by Bach. This is the best of the Simon Brenner novels published in English. But doggone it - why can't Brenner have some sort of romantic relationship. Just once. ( )
