De schrijver probeert verschillende versies van een liefdesgeschiedenis uit. Die liefdesgeschiedenis, zo lijkt het, wordt geïnspireerd door een manuscript dat de schrijver van een jonge vrouw kreeg toegestuurd en waarmee hij diverse uitgevers benaderde. Alle uitgevers waren enthousiast, maar vonden dat het meer politiek moest worden uitgewerkt. Het speelde tenslotte in Zuid-Afrika! De jonge schrijfster pleegt uiteindelijk zelfmoord. Dan komt de schrijver er achter dat de geliefde in haar boek een "blanke terrorist" is, zoals het regime het wenst uit te drukken. Terwijl de schrijver zijn liefdesgeschiedenis probeert vorm te geven (de hoofdpersoon daarvan is net als André Brink professor in de literatuurwetenschap), komt Zuid-Afrika steeds meer in brand te staan. Ook de geliefden moeten keuzes maken.
Een fascinerend boek. Toen het geschreven werd, was nog niet bekend hoe het uiteindelijk zou worden in Zuid-Afrika.
