But it was also a really fascinating story about a girl surviving in the West. Trying to start schools, rally support for struggling families and fighting off the men who just want to wed her (because she can't possibly want to work and be independent). I like her strength and I liked her loyalty and sweet shyness. ( ) Well, I had read a number of Janette Oke books when I was younger. I had started to watch the Hallmark Series and could not believe the stories I was seeing-depicting anything she would write. I decided to go and read this book. I'm sure Janette Oke was happy to have her book chosen to be turned into a series, but I am just as sure that she would not appreciate the manner in which they changed the story. The first of the Canadian West series, When Calls the Heart by Janette Oke is the story of Elizabeth, a pretty, educated, young lady who was not prepared for a “teaching position on the Canadian frontier. But she squares her shoulders and takes on her formidable task with love, humor and determination. She is just as determined not to become romantically involved with a frontiersman.
