The pacing seemed uneven to me. A lot of time spent in the setup, not a ton of time spent on the receiver part, then we're off into the world, and boop! Done! Almost feels like a poem more than a narrative? ( ) from Lee: I first read The Giver around fifth grade. The text evoked almost cinematic images in my child’s mind so indelibly that I can still remember them decades later. When I discovered Lowry’s latest teen title, Son, was in fact the fourth book in a series which begins with The Giver, I re-read it and the read the last three books in the quartet. I was less impressed (or perhaps impressionable?) than I was as a child, but I still appreciated the spare language that manages to communicate rich worlds. Fans of Collins’ Hunger Games Trilogy, Roth’s Divergent, and their many thematic offspring may enjoy the dystopia-driven plot and setting. The Giver is quieter and the adventure is more intellectual than martial compared with most modern offerings in the genre and worth reading, or re-reading.
