A long film, nearly three hours in all. The musical style seems old fashioned at times, yet the choreography is excellent, and the scenery gorgeous. The Russian army, eventually driving the Jews out, are shown in historical context, making this useful from a social history point of view, and overall there’s much to think about. At the end, which was almost too abrupt, I found myself wishing it could be longer.

Highly recommended.

A man with five daughters is faced with changes in society.

Slow, and doesn't make me care about it. It's too serious to be any fun, too much a musical to be serious. I find most of the songs annoying and ineffective. And the musical numbers are pretty boring. (Although John Williams and Isaac Stern do an excellent job with the instrumental stuff.) It's not a bad movie; there's some nice enough stuff here and there. But I can think of about a million other things I'd rather do with three hours.

Book description
Filmed on location in Eastern Europe, this beloved musical based on Sholem Aleichem's stories was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three. Director Norman Jewison chronicles the trials of Jewish peasant Tevye the milkman (Israeli actor Topol), humble father of three strong-willed daughters and husband to oft-objecting wife, Golde (Norma Crane), in pre-revolutionary Russia. Violinist Isaac Stern provides the haunting music of the fiddler.
