The Tomb is a fun book and Jack is a character that grows on the reader. Along with Wilson’s straight forward writing, humor and almost comic book sense of adventure The Tomb is a great story full of action, a little romance and lots of cool, taught moments. Investigating strange disappearances and trying to mange his personal life at the same time throws a wrench in Jack's plans. Jack comes across a strange and mythical breed of creatures from the pages of ancient India and they have for some reason come ashore on his turf. Sounds like Jack has some fixing to do. With a link to an event which took place decades ago these creatures and their manically misguided caretaker have _targeted a bloodline for extinction. Just happens it has to be someone Jack cares deeply for. Big mistake. With a mix of Doc Savage, Remo Williams and Constantine along with some creative historical horror elements Wilson's The Tomb paves the way for a damn good read. ( ) Repairman Jack fixes problems, the kind the police can't or won't solve. Jack's current ex-girlfriend needs his help as her aunt has disappeared without a trace in the middle of the night. In the meantime, an Indian man comes to him needing his grandmother's necklace found before morning. She is dying and must have this rare heirloom back. There is something fishy with both these cases but Jack figures it out. I love Jack. He's got so many last names it's a wonder he keeps them straight. He's an honest, upstanding guy who knows that sometimes the bad guy deserves to die... slowly. He has humour and a flippancy that perhaps hides his shyness and he's witty; everything I love in a hero.' Gia breaks up with him when she finds out what he does. Can she love someone who kills? The cases he tackles are brutal, scary, supernatural, and fun. There's never a dull moment around and Jack's full of derring-do. I devoured novels like this back in the 80s but somehow never read this one. It's a slightly silly, not really that scary, but enormously entertaining horror yarn with a likeable 2 fisted hero, a decent supporting cast and some really fun monsters. I suspect this version has been revised to bring some of the cultural references up to date but there's no getting away from that great B-movie feeling that so many 80s horror novels had. Definitely looking forward to more of the same. First of the Repairman Jack series. Jack lives "off the grid" and works to fix problems that others cannot, usually the police. He is drawn into two cases, which quickly become intertwined: the theft of a necklace of a UN diplomat's mother and the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend's spinster aunt. Involving the desecration of a Bengalese temple and rakoshi, retribution is the theme here. A bit far fetched, but Jack rules. no reviews | add a review
