It became a slog and I gave up about 60% of the way ( ) 7.5/10 My first book by Jim Butcher and I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the other books in the Codex Alera series and hoping that many of my questions will be answered. Several interesting main characters, although there certainly are some stereotypical characters (the cruel and sadistic lord/steadholder, the mysterious youth who apparently has none of the powers that are common in most people, the young woman trying to prove herself in her career, the warrior, the treacherous hordemaster, etc.). I hope there will be more depth to the characters in future books. The pacing is pretty relentless... one deadly crisis after another. The magic (furycrafting using the elements) is mostly unexplained. Again, hoping for explanations in the rest of the series. no reviews | add a review
