DNF. There was a gross amount of abuse, and a gross amount of lazy writing. It became a slog and I gave up about 60% of the way ( )

Посредствено, елементарно и детинско фентъзи. Загадка остава за мен защо е толкова популярно. Може би защото по-голямата част от фентъзи-феновете го харесват точно такова ... ( )

7.5/10

My first book by Jim Butcher and I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the other books in the Codex Alera series and hoping that many of my questions will be answered.

Several interesting main characters, although there certainly are some stereotypical characters (the cruel and sadistic lord/steadholder, the mysterious youth who apparently has none of the powers that are common in most people, the young woman trying to prove herself in her career, the warrior, the treacherous hordemaster, etc.). I hope there will be more depth to the characters in future books.

The pacing is pretty relentless... one deadly crisis after another.

The magic (furycrafting using the elements) is mostly unexplained. Again, hoping for explanations in the rest of the series. ( )

I get it, writing is good therapy, but take your misogyny out of the texted. I came in hoping for something a little bit better than ugly women are worthless. Rapey and degrading. ( )

This was far better than I expected it to be. I couldn’t help but wonder if this influenced Sanderson at all. Just saying there’s some similarities between spren and furies, both use Knights… ( )
