Grade: 2-4
The book tells the story of Django’s early life in Belgium, his passion for music, and how he overcame adversity to become a musical legend.

This would be a good book for grades 1-3. It is the story of a jazz guitarist, Django, and how he relearned how to play guitar after he was in an accident that injured him. This would be good in a classroom for kids who are interested in music and learning how to develop their reading skills.

This book would be good for any elementary school readers. This is about a famous guitarist and how he learned to play and his childhood. He was in a fire and had to relearn how to play the guitar. This would be a great book to learn about differences and disabilities.

Maybe this story will help inspire other children with injuries, illness, or disability. A poetic biography, beautifully illustrated, told with short descriptive and active sentences, bringing us to a different time and different culture. A time of hard work and country life. A people who enjoy music, dancing and celebration. Abandoned by his father, Django scrapes by as a street musician, then plays in dance halls. A fire scars his hands and the doctors say he'll never play again. He pulls himself out of his depression and practices, forcing his hand to start to obey him. Months go by. He is again part of the music.[return]The end pages include a summary of the rest of Django's life, Notes on the Roma, more information about some of the historic items which readers might not be familiar with, a bibliography (for adults) and a selected discography.
