Three weeks into her new position as priest at St. Alban's Episcopal parish in Millers Kill, NY, Clare Fergusson finds a new born baby on the church doorstep. At the hospital Clare meets Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne, also ex-Army as she is. Clare stays involved because the Burns couple in her parish want to foster then adopt the baby. But it turns out more members are connected to the situation and Clare keeps asking questions. Russ and Clare both have issues from their pasts and Russ has a rocky marriage. Clare does a number of reckless actions and makes bad decisions at times. Russ doesn't seem to have a consistent logical focus for fact finding. Plot was drawn out to keep the convoluted plot progressing but I liked the descriptions of the area and some of the side characters, so will probably give the next volume a try. ( ) It all starts when newly ordained Episcopalian priest Claire Ferguson finds a baby outside her church on a cold December night. There is a note with the baby naming him Cody and asking that he be given to a couple of lawyers who have been trying to adopt for quite a while. Millers Kill Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne is called in and a search for the young mother begins. Claire and Russ find her body and a murder investigation begins. And, since her baby was found outside Claire's church, it looks like the killer might be a member of the congregation. As Claire gets to know her congregants, she finds herself unraveling some of the town's secrets and finds herself getting to know Russ better. A relationship begins between the two of them because both are private people but are able to talk to each other about things they can't talk about with anyone else. However, Claire is a new priest and Russ is a married nonbeliever. The story was filled with interesting characters. Claire is caring but quite impulsive and not much concerned with her own safety. Russ is greatly concerned with his town and keeping the people in it safe. I liked the setting of the story. The Adirondacks at the onset of winter are quite a change for a former military pilot from Northern Virginia and Claire is struggling to adapt. Suzanne Torren did a great job with the voices and the mood of the story. An engaging traditional mystery set in rural New York state. I quite liked the protagonists, a dedicated small-town cop and a woman Episcopal priest recently transplanted from Virginia, both of whom are ex-military. Both are highly driven public servants, though their approaches to service are very different, and they develop an intense, charming friendship that threatens to turn to something more. I really liked the meditations on vocation, as well as getting to watch competent people be competent (although could have done with more competence from Clare, who is a bit of a maniac whenever it serves the plot). The mystery is decent, though not always good at disguising its red herrings, and the suspense scenes are top notch. The evocation of a wintry upstate New York is quite atmospheric, though not always nuanced - supporting characters are flat and dialogue is uneven (especially the teenagers', although as a contemporary of these kids, can report that she made a valiant effort). A solid read, can definitely see myself picking up another of these novels. P.S., I'm going to experiment with not rating books unless I really loved or really hated them. Their search for the baby's mother quickly leads them into the secrets that shadow Miller's Kill like the ever-present Adirondacks.
