2020, Technological Forecasting and Social ChangeCitation Excerpt :The open innovation practices characterizing the VBC we analyzed facilitate the listing, searching, and exchange of ideas and knowledge assets of potential economic value among the community members and the company, thus realizing both the outside-in and the inside-out process (Enkel et al., 2009), which fundamentally characterize the open innovation paradigm (Chesbrough, 2006). From the other side, a VBC can be used as a tool that allow organizations to externally acquire valuable solutions for solving internal innovation problems, in a cost- and time- efficient way (Ghezzi et al., 2018), according to the level of problems complexity and the nature of innovation problems (Natalicchio et al., 2017). In such a way, our findings permit to extend the literature on open innovation by introducing the VBC as a new tool for implementing open innovation strategies through crowdsourcing (Tucci et al., 2016).
