Data indicate that AF incidence is increasing, leading to projections of an increase in AF prevalence in the USA by at least 2.5-fold by 20503,4, and the consequences of this increase on the frequency of AF-related stroke will depend on the effectiveness of AF detection and implementation of prevention with anticoagulant medications and behaviours.

Rates and Determinants of 5-Year Outcomes After Atrial Fibrillation–Related Stroke: A Population Study
AF-stroke is associated with considerable long-term morbidity, fatality, stroke recurrence, and nursing home requirement, and adequately resourced national AF strategies to improve AF detection and prevention are needed.

Findings that support a pharmacogenetically modulated effect of bucindolol in patients with polymorphisms in β1-adrenergic receptor are explored and an overview of ongoing studies are provided.

Public health efforts to measure disease burden and increase awareness of symptoms and risk factors need to improve, particularly in low- and middle-income regions to address this leading cause of morbidity and mortality.

The decrease in the incidence of cardioembolic/atrial fibrillation stroke in this study was probably due to a slight increase in the utilization of antithrombotic therapy in patients with atrialfibrillation, but the use of such therapies will have to increase further because of the expected aging of the population in coming years.
Stroke Associated with Atrial Fibrillation – Incidence and Early Outcomes in the North Dublin Population Stroke Study
- N. HannonO. Sheehan P. Kelly

AF-associated stroke occurred in one third of all patients and was associated with a distinct profile of recurrent, severe and disabling stroke, and _targeted strategies to increase anticoagulation rates may provide a substantial benefit to prevent severe disabling stroke at a population level.
High Prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation Among Patients With Ischemic Stroke
Access to nationwide register data shows that AF is more common among patients with ischemic stroke than those previously reported, and the likelihood for underlying AF was strongly correlated to the CHA2DS2-VASC score, which is a point based scheme for assessment of stroke risk but which also predicts likelihood of AF.
High Prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation Among Patients With Ischemic Stroke
The aim was to determine the nationwide prevalence of AF among patients with ischemic stroke, as well as their use of oral anticoagulation, and to identify and offer protection to individuals at risk of stroke.

Medical care for stroke patients with AF is associated with higher costs compared with those without AF; this is explained mainly by confounding factors and driven essentially by a significant difference in acute hospitalization costs.
Editorial comment--Stroke incidence studies one step closer to the elusive gold standard?
Stroke should be studied in a population-wide context because a large proportion of the burden of care for stroke is borne by health services outside the hospital sector and by families of affected…
