Possibly the finest Philly rapper of the modern age, Meek Mill has spent years grinding his way to top and now he has finally arrived.
Raised by a single mother after his father was shot dead when he was aged 5, Meek Mill passed up the hustler’s lifestyle and instead began focusing on the rap game when he was 16. With a succession of mixtapes he began to build his profile, with fans being drawn to the consistency of Meek’s work.
The release of his forth mixtape ‘Flamers 2: Hottest In Tha City’ was the event that really kicked the rest of his career into motion. After signing a management deal, an encounter with Atlanta’s T.I led to a meeting with Warner Bros and eventually, Meek becoming a part of T.I’s Grand Hustle label. Unfortunately legal troubles for both the artists stifled any chance of a release coming out on Grand Hustle but during this time, Meek Mill had also struck up a partnership with Rick Ross and in February 2011 he signed to Ross’ Maybach Music Group label.
Meek’s hype began to build at this point, aided by things like an appearance of XXL’s Freshmen list and his popular Dreamchasers mixtapes. All this culminated in the release of his debut album ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ in 2012 which, with features from the likes of Drake and Wale, went to number 2 in the Billboard 200.
The success of his album lead to Meek making his own label Dream Chasers Records where he has begun to foster and develop new talent so that they might follow in his footsteps and become one of biggest rap artists in America.
Read moreIf I was to launch a rap career in the kind of hip hop scene that we’ve seen take hold over the past decade or so, the word ‘meek’ would be one of the very last words to spring to mind in terms of an adjective to include. alongside the likes of ‘timid’ and ‘modest’; it’s just not the done thing to behave that way in the present-day rap game. Given that his birth name is Robert Williams, though, Meek Mill couldn’t go by that - too much room for confusion on this side of the pond - so instead, he went with a moniker that is indeed as misnomer; you can’t work closely with Rick Ross and not have a garish taste for too much money, too many cars, and hideous jewellery. Either way, Mill has proved a huge hit as part of Ross’ Maybach Music Group, with his only album on the imprint to date, Dreams and Nightmares, going in at number two on the U.S. charts; his blend of typical rap fare with socially conscious lyricism and unusually nasal delivery have seen him stand out from the crowd. He’s currently readying album number two, Dreams Worth More Than Money, so expect to see him return to the UK soon, possibly with MMG labelmates in tow; his hectic shows are already becoming the stuff of modern day legend.
Robert Rahmeek Williams, adopted the pseudonym Meek Mill at the beginning of his career, possibly to disassociate himself from the popular Take That member in the UK. Both Robert Williams do have showmanship in common, Meek Mill is known to be a self assured and confident performer having spent so much time learning from record label boss Rick Ross. The rapper signed up Meek Mill in 2011 and he has been described as going from strength to strength since, releasing a debut album in 2012 that peaked at #2 on the US Billboard charts.
This relative newcomer has built a cult fan base in the UK in a short space of time. He may only have one album but he has worked on several mix tapes and has a variety of original singles to add to a setlist. Appearing onstage looking pretty indifferent to the scene of screaming fans below, he begins with 'Tupac Back' which the audience attempt to rap along with. He does acknowledge the crowd afterwards as he encourages them to loosen up and dance whilst he creates a party atmosphere. He is not onstage for very long due to the rapid pace he thunders through a setlist, yet as the end beats of 'Ima Boss' fades the audience seem more than happy with the performance.
Meek Mill possesses possibly one of the most deceiving stage names in rap and hip hop history: this guy is anything but meek on stage. He delivers a groundbreaking performance, owning the stage and oozing confidence and charisma. Meek Mill spent years grinding and sweating his way to the top of the industry and his hard work is finally beginning to pay off as millions of fans listen to his music and go crazy for his tunes. He has a huge cult following and the atmosphere at his gig was crazy intense, with screaming, crying and dancing fans hoarding the place. Despite a modest list of singles, Meek Mill manages to fill his set list and fill it well. He sung a few covers but mostly performed his originals, to great crowd reactions. Meek Mill thundered through his set list at breakneck speed, rapping his heart out as the crowd occasionally joined along. He began with his tune ‘Tupac Back’ and finished with the hit ‘Dreams and Nightmares’, which had the whole crowd roaring.
