Strengthening families

Families come in all shapes and sizes, but what matters most is that children feel they belong and are supported.

We help families who are at risk stay strong and connected. Working with individuals, communities, partners and governments, we prevent family breakdowns and offer support during emergencies. Our training, resources, and research help inform and improve care for all families.

Why this support is needed

Our work is essential to prevent family breakdowns, ensure children grow up in loving environments, and to provide stability and care during challenging times.

Family separation can have severe impacts on a child's health and wellbeing

When children are separated from their families, they are more likely to suffer from nutritional deficiencies like low vitamin D and iron. Dental problems, such as cavities, affect up to 65% of these children. They also face higher rates of skin, respiratory, and stomach infections and often miss important vaccinations. Additionally, the emotional impact is severe, with many children experiencing PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

Building trust early in life sets the stage for healthy relationships

When children feel safe, loved, and supported, they develop secure attachments, leading to higher self-esteem, better emotional regulation, and improved social skills. Secure attachments also help children to develop empathy and self-understanding.

92% of former participants have strong family relationships

Over 90% of those we support have strong relationships with friends and family. Children are well cared for, and adults who have been through our programmes give good care to their own children, passing down the care they have received to the next generation and breaking negative cycles.

How we help

We consider each family’s unique circumstances to provide the support they truly need. This might include coaching on parenting and managing a household, family counselling to resolve issues, and access to healthcare for children and nursing mothers, including mental health services.

We also offer educational support for boys and girls, covering things like school fees, uniforms, learning materials, tutoring, and after-school help. Plus, we train and equip parents with skills to earn an income and create a stable home.

Every child and family is part of a community. We team up with partners to build strong support networks, helping children and families grow, learn, and thrive in a positive, nurturing environment. We also help strengthen families so children in alternative care settings can be reintegrated back into their families.
