Ludwig Katzenellenbogen Berlin • 1925–1930 Stock Card as above, with a date of sale on 10 (?) January 1925. 6Estella Katzenellenbogen Berlin & Santa Monica (California) • 1930 until 1948/51 Wife of the above, from whom divorced in 1930; references to N.V. Amsterdamsche Kunsthandel Paul Cassirer & Co., Amsterdam, when the painting was exhibited in 1932 and in 1937 (French Art 1200–1900, [exh. cat.] Royal Academy of Arts, London 1932, no. 547; Chefs-d'Œuvre de l'Art français, [exh. cat.] Palais des Musées d'Art Moderne [Palais de Tokyo], Paris 1937, no. 426.) are based upon the fact that most of Estella Katzenellenbogen's collecton was then stored with the gallery, owned by Dr. Walter Feilchenfeldt. In 1940, Estella Katzenellenbogen emigrated to California, taking along pictures from her collection (Anja Walter-Ris, Die Geschichte der Galerie Nierendorf, Kunstleidenschaft im Dienst der Moderne, Berlin/New York 1920–1995, Zurich 2003, pp. 255, 276, n. 210), including Messaline (French Painting from David to Toulouse-Lautrec, Loans from French and American Museums and Collections, [exh. cat.] Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 1941, no. 117); documents in the archive of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, show that the painting was sent by, and returned to the Katzenellenbogen family in Santa Monica in 1940/41.
