Kirk tilted his head. “However, you think it’s possible that my path to command was smoother than yours by virtue of the privilege I was born with. That I may have been given more opportunities for achievement than you have.” “That is a fair way of putting it,” Egdor said, holding his gaze unwaveringly.Kirk was silent for a long moment. “I can’t deny that possibility,” he finally said, surprising Egdor. Kirk reflected on the time that Jonathan Archer and Malcolm Reed of the original Earth starship Enterprise had dealt with a similar situation by claiming they were genetically augmented supersoldiers created by the captors’ enemy nation, a claim that had backfired by exacerbating the planet’s military tensions. Historians still debated the degree to which Archer and Reed had triggered or escalated that world’s subsequent wars. Kirk had no desire to go down in history the same way. (English)

“Yes, Captain Kirk. The Karabosi and the Aulacri are related species. My people evolved on Karabos II, in parallel with another species of our genus. I gather that it is uncommon in the galaxy for two civilized species to share a planet, that usually one such species outcompetes the others or assimilates them genetically.” “There are exceptions,” Sulu said. “Xindus, Valakis . . .” “Karabos II was another exception—for a time. “It’s been very rewarding work. We’re helping a lot of people out here.” McCoy fidgeted. “Still . . . it can be frustrating dealing with the local attitudes sometimes. My last stint was on Capella IV—a fine people in their way, proud and honorable, but incredibly stubborn when it came to accepting even the most basic medical care. We spent months butting heads with them, helping where we could, until we finally decided it was a lost cause and just left.” (English)
