Motivation
editIt is necessary to somehow filter occupation (P106) to find the real occupations, as a subset of human activity, and this property makes it possible. Occupations now contain a lot of human activity that has nothing to do with an occupation in the sense of work, and it seems impossible to clean it up.[1][2] For example this leads to serial killer (Q484188) being an “occupation”.[3] Check also the thread Wikidata:Project chat/Archive/2020/05#ISCO occupation code.
Note that ISCO-88 occupation class (P952) should be changed to cover ISCO-88 when this property has been created, as almost all entries follow that standard. Not all though, so each entry must be checked. Jeblad (talk) 12:46, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Note also that for some activities the actual work might be slightly different from the thing described at Wikipedia, thus the work is only related to the item. Jeblad (talk) 13:20, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
Discussion
edit- Support The present situation with confusing "occupations" is one of several important argument against the use of Wikidata-connected infoboxes in wpno. Johann Sebastian Bach was according to Wikidata hired as a virtuoso (Q214970), which he was not. The word is a description of his skills, not his occupation. As I understand the suggestion is an attempt to remove such errors, I will support it. --Trygve W Nodeland (talk) 14:26, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Strong Support. E.g., the Norwegian white supremacist Anders Behring Breivik is listed with occupations such as "mass murderer", "terrorist" and "conspiracy theorist". These are hardly lines of work! This property needs to be reigned in. Asav (talk) 14:45, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

- Support Using a UN statistical standard instead of our own folksonomy will be an improvement. The ISCO 2008 standard (which superseded the old ISCO 1988) is not simply translated by the statistical agencies, but also adapted to each country's usage. These adaptions of ISCO-08 have various other names: STYRK in Norway, DISCO in Denmark, SSYK in Sweden etc H@r@ld (talk) 06:41, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
