Discussion

edit

  •   Support - The existing properties used in references are not suitable for citing a plate number, so this proposal is needed. Three complete examples are needed, however, before it can be approved and created. AdamSeattle (talk) 21:45, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • The previous discussion was generalized to references to all kinds of illustrations/figures (often abbreviated “fig.” from Latin “figura(e)”) numbers commonly used in many publications (and frequently with their own page for the index of illustrations/figures (at start or end of books or chapters), or other items also indexed by some number (but that are not unique ids, as they are relative to the publication containing them): tables of data, definitions and rules numbers in standards, theorems/lemmas and equations in math/scientific papers, numbered articles in legal texts, figures/diagrams in patents (I think there's already a similar property for verse numbers in poems/religious texts). Generally they are useful when page numbers are not relevant, notably for documents that exist in various publications and forms, or because the publication without these illustrations would make no sense at all.
This proposal is about "plates" but seems very restricted when the most common use case would be for all kinds of (numbered/indexed) illustrations which are not optional but an essential part of the content, only partly described/commented and referenced within the main content and footer notes (which make sense only if these illustrations are present, and sometimes the illustration is the only essential part, required for completeness, and not described anywhere else; so the same remark would apply for many tables of data, independantly of their location in the book/paper: as integrant part of chapters, or in appended annexes). @Verdy p: Hello, please could you clarify if this is a "support" (per the related discssion); I would quite like to start using this property, and that might demonstrate consensus. Presumably, any requirement for further specific properties per the above doesn't invalidate this property proposal. Thank you, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 11:28, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
See the previous talk link above. I have no opinion about this proposal, I just comment about the scope of use: how many new properties would we need then? Verdy p (talk) 13:58, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In the image above, Plate XXIV.1, XXIV.2, etc; or XXIV(1), XXIV(2), etc? I think sometimes one plate has a number of figures, expressly identified as such, in which case XXIV (Fig. 1) etc? We may end up with several formats, even were a recommended treatment agreed upon. Are you recommending an additional proposal for figure? Presumably this doesn't make a property for plate any less valid/needed. Thanks, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 13:55, 15 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
